I love to run.
When I start running I feel the anticipation of a great race, my palms begin to feel sweaty , the body starts to give tiny jumps to the front as if testing whether the muscles are ready or not and the head is oozy with excitement. I start my cardio watch, turn on my mp3 player with a set of high beat music and there we go. I go slow at first, a fast walk to get used to the effort in an attempt to prepare what is going to happen next. My body is eager ,waiting for the next step of the run, feeling that this warm up is taking too long.
Then I start to run, my feet pounding the floor, first slowly then faster and my heart is racing, at least that is what my monitor is saying .130 then 140 and at last the 160 heart beats per minute. I have to control myself at this point , don’t want to overstep it.
After the first mile it arrives. We feel that sensation of the body saying ok that’s enough, this is not funny anymore. For a couple of years I would fight it untill I reach the second mile and then give up. Now it’s different . I overcome it and say to the body just one more mile, we can’t give up so soon. It’s not easy . That sensation almost ruins the running experience but is also a test to our determination and courage. It means the same as life , that the best things take some effort and pain to get.
After the first 20 mns, we start to burn fat (or so it is told). Ddrops of sweat from my hair start making their way to the floor, in their relentless gravitational path. With quick gestures I clean them (or try to as they keep appearing in my forehead despite my best efforts). This is the best time as the tired sensation eases up and we are in perfect control of our movements. At these times it is easy to get carried away and increase our speed. Do it carefully. If you go too fast you loose that equilibrium and you will be forced to end the journey earlier and feel a bit frustrated. it is also the time we decide if we go to the 10k run or we stop at the five miles.
If the body responds correctly we go further and further. The euforia feeling is wonderful and increases with every kilometer. At 7k the tiny problems start to nag more like the sock which is a bit lower than we would like to, the toe that is feeling bruised after so much effort. They are not important , you are, I say to the body. So we keep at it, body and soul in a strange and wonderful symbiosis untill we get to the 10k. At this time I ask myself , can I do one more? Usually I can’t and stop. Sometimes I run one more but so far this one more has been so painfull that it is not worth it. But I will overcome it. My best is 14k.
The relief and well being feeling afterwards is enormous and worth it. You feel refreshed after a good bath and happy with yourself for having done the run. I absolutely recommend it .
